Southern Maine’s breathtaking coastline and timeless charm create a stage where life unfold like poetry. When choosing a photographer in Maine, it’s important to consider the style of photography that speaks to you.

You have probably heard both of these words used by photographers. Whether it’s a milestone like maternity or an intimate wedding they’re often used to describe a style. Each offers something magical, but what do they actually mean?

 Storytelling Photography: Weaving a Dream

Storytelling photography is like crafting a love letter in images. It’s intentional, poetic, and deeply emotive. Together, we’ll create a visual narrative that captures the essence of your connection. This style often involves gentle guidance to highlight your story against Southern Maine’s enchanting backdrops.

Storytelling sessions are perfect if:

  • You’re drawn to romance and artistry, with a touch of cinematic magic.
  • You want your session to feel like the pages of your favorite novel or poem.

Documentary Photography: Embracing the Unscripted

Documentary photography is truth and authentic moments in its purest form. It captures the quiet in between moments, the unguarded smiles, and the fleeting glances that make up the tapestry of your day. There’s no staging—just the honest beauty of life as it unfolds. It’s the fly on the wall perspective; no prompts or posing, just you and your loves embracing the moment together making up the details of your day.  It’s a warm summer evening in Scarborough. Your child’s giggle echoing as they chase seagulls along Pine Point Beach, the wind tousling their hair.

I often use a documentary style in my in home sessions where families or couples naturally feel comfortable to be authentic and during parts of larger, intimate weddings like receptions and cocktail hours.

Documentary sessions are perfect for you if:

  • You love the raw, unfiltered beauty of candid moments.
  • You want your session to feel like a collection of memories frozen in time.
  • Your children are not ones to sit still and smile or take posing directions.

Which Style Feels Like You?

Long story short: If you dream of photos that feel like art, telling your story in a way that’s timeless and romantic, storytelling photography is your match.

If you long for authenticity and the real, unfiltered moments of your life, documentary photography may be the style for you.

No matter your preference, the timeless landscapes of Maine provide the perfect backdrops—whether it’s the dramatic cliffs of Cape Elizabeth, the quaint charm of Old Port in Portland, or the peaceful sands of Ogunquit.
