How to Prepare for your Maternity Session | Portland, Maine Maternity Photographer

A child runs around her parents during a greenhouse maternity session

There is a particular kind of aura that surrounds a woman in the final months before she meets her child.

It is not loud.
It is not hurried.

It is steady.
Growing.
Certain.

Inside my favorite living studio, East Pine Plant Shop, surrounded by lush greens even in the middle of winter, this particular maternity session felt like standing at the edge of something sacred.

Outside, snow softened the world into blue hush.

Inside, warmth gathered beneath her ribs.

This greenhouse maternity session was about that warmth. About honoring the body as it stretches and grows into a new home.

Why Choose a Greenhouse for a Winter Maternity Session in Maine?

Winter in Maine is breathtaking — but it can also be harsh. For expecting mothers seeking comfort, softness, and natural light without cold winds or icy footing, an indoor greenhouse offers something elevated.

At East Pine Plant Shop, light filters through glass ceilings and layers of greenery create depth and texture year-round. The warmth allows you to relax fully into your body rather than bracing against the elements.

For maternity photography in Portland, Maine, this setting offers:

  • Consistent, flattering natural light
  • Privacy and warmth during colder months
  • An organic yet refined aesthetic
  • The ability to move slowly and comfortably

A greenhouse session is natural but a true reflection of the season that is pregnancy; growing in every form.

And luxury lives in intention.

Maternity Photography Rooted in Story

I know that maternity photography is not just about documenting a bump.

It is about documenting transition.

The way a mother’s hands instinctively protect her belly.
The way her partner stands steady behind her.
The way anticipation hums quietly in every frame.

In this session, we leaned into softness:

Elevated dresses leading to complete vulnerability.
Neutral tones.
Bare skin against warm light.

Some images were gently implied to honor the rawness of pregnancy; skin revealed without exposure, curves honored without excess. Not provocative. Not performative.

Simply reverent.

Growing life is not small.

It deserves to be documented without apology.

How to Prepare for Your Maternity Session: Confidence, Body & Skincare

Some of the most common questions I am asked are:

“How do I prepare for my maternity photos?”
“How do I feel confident during maternity pictures?”
“What should I wear for maternity photos?”

Let’s talk about that.

Feeling Confident in a Changing Body

Pregnancy can feel empowering and vulnerable at the same time.

You may feel radiant one day and on unfamiliar terrain the next.

If you are considering a maternity session know this:

You are always in control.

We move at your pace.
We photograph only what feels safe and honest to you.
We honor your boundaries completely.

Confidence does not come from posing perfectly.

It comes from feeling supported during a vulnerable time.

During your session, I guide gentle movement that accentuates your new form, natural hand placement, and subtle shifts in posture that flatter your shape while preserving authenticity. You will never be left wondering what to do.

And if vulnerability feels intimidating, we build into it slowly.

Sometimes the most powerful images happen in the quiet in-between moments.

Skincare & Beauty Preparation for Natural Light Photography

For maternity sessions, and all sessions, soft, luminous skin photographs beautifully.

In the week leading up to your session:

  • Hydrate consistently
  • Use gentle exfoliation 2–3 days before (not the night before to avoid red and puffy skin)
  • Moisturize your belly, arms, and shoulders or anything that may be exposed
  • Avoid drastic new skincare products

If planning more natural and dressed down photos consider:

  • Seamless undergarments to avoid pressure marks
  • Loose clothing to play with form (loose sweater, unbuttoned jeans, loose button down shirts etc)
  • Neutral nail tones for timeless detail shots
  • Loose curls or waves, small braids in hair, hair that can be fluffed or adds texture to the photos

Makeup should enhance — not mask. Thin layers of products and soft tones complement natural light beautifully.

If desired, I’m happy to recommend trusted local hair and makeup artists to really elevate your experience (and for a little, much needed, pampering)

What to Bring to Your Maternity Session

To create depth and variety, consider bringing:

  • A fitted dress or bodysuit to highlight shape
  • A flowing option for movement
  • A neutral blanket or heirloom item
  • Ultrasound images for detail photographs
  • Water and a light snack

If your partner or children are joining, coordinate tones rather than matching exactly and don’t be afraid of textures. Creams, olives, warm browns, soft blushes, bubble sweaters, fitted contrasted with oversized, knits etc., photograph beautifully against the lush greenhouse greenery.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Maternity Photography in Maine

Both indoor and outdoor maternity sessions in Maine are stunning — but they create different emotional landscapes and tell different stories.

Outdoor sessions offer sweeping landscapes and open air.

Indoor studios and greenhouse sessions offer intimacy, privacy, and warmth and control.

For mothers in later pregnancy, comfort allows relaxation. And relaxation creates natural, heirloom-quality imagery.

Especially in winter, indoor maternity photography at East Pine Plant Shop or Suite G Studio (my most used studios) provides a refined alternative without sacrificing organic beauty.

The Beginning of Everything

Pregnancy is the beginning writing of a story you will someday tell your child.

These photographs become proof:

That you waited.
That you softened.
That before they ever took a breath,
they were already loved.

Inside the greenhouse, surrounded by leaves that refused to surrender to winter, she stood luminous.

Already becoming someone new.

And that becoming deserved to be honored.
